Cong. Kiko at 17th anniversary of the Northern Negros Natural Park

Let us ensure that the equilibrium of nature remains not only for our good but the good of generations to come. Nature does not belong to us. In the timescale of God, we belong to nature. It is not for us to control but for us to steward.

This is the crux of the message of Third District Representative Francisco “Kiko” Benitez for the participants and guests who attended the second day of the 17th anniversary celebration of the North Negros Natural Park held at Gawahon EcoPark in Victorias City.

As Cong. Kiko urged everyone to rethink the meaning of Asenso and Abanse to people’s lives, he urged for all stakeholders to help protect the natural resources that abound in the NNNP, to secure and assure that the balance of nature is maintained in the protected area as among the province’s greatest resources.

The two-day (August 13 – 14, 2022) North Negros Natural Park anniversary event was sponsored by Victorias City Government with Mayor Javier “Javi” Benitez in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Provincial Environment Office. Among activities lined up were an environmental symposium, guided birdwatching, bike tour, bio-diversity tour, and a trade fair and exhibit.

The North Negros Natural Park was started in 2005 under Proclamation 895 signed by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. It spans across five municipalities – Murcia, E.B. Magalona, Salvador Benedicto, Toboso and Calatrava; and six cities – Victorias, Silay, Talisay, San Carlos, Sagay and Cadiz.

The NNNP management headed by its superintendent Engr. Joan Nathaniel Gerangaya, who is also OIC of the Negros Occidental Provincial Environment Office is tasked to maintain its high biodiversity and balanced ecosystem.*
